Acknowledging the potential dangers this spooky holiday can sometimes present, parents and children should always keep the following tips in mind as they trick or treat.

10 Tips for a Safe and Happy Halloween

Travel only in familiar neighborhoods.
Only stop at houses or apartment buildings that are well lit. Remain on the porch and never enter a person’s house.
Always travel in small groups, accompanied by an adult if under the age of 12.
Avoid very long costumes and oversized shoes, which can easily cause you to trip.
Wear reflective tape on costumes and bags so you are visible to traffic and other trick-or-treaters.
Walk, do not run, from house to house.
Always walk on sidewalks. In neighborhoods with no sidewalks, always walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic.
Always cross streets as a group on established crosswalks.
When possible use makeup instead of masks. Besides being uncomfortable, masks can obstruct a child’s view of traffic, steps, and holiday decorations.
Never eat candy until a parent or responsible adult can inspect it.

  Pop Rock Recipes

 

 

Edible Wizard Wands

Ingredients:
Pretzel Rods
Baking Chocolate
Pumpkin Patch Orange Pop Rocks

Extras:
Wax paper
1.Melt chocolate in deep microwave safe bowl in microwave oven according to the directions.
2.Let chocolate cool and slightly thicken for approximately one minute.
3.Pour, stir and mix desired amount of Pop Rocks into slightly thickened chocolate.
4.Dip pretzel rods midway into melted chocolate and Pop Rocks mixture. 
5.Place chocolate and Pop Rocks covered pretzel rods on wax paper to let cool
6.Refrigerate until served

Drinkable Popping Potion Ingredients: 

Orange and Lime Jello
Pop Rocks 
Ginger ale or Lemon Lime Soda 

Extras:
Clear cups

1. Prepare Jello according to the instructions on the box
2. Cut the Jello up into small cubes
3. Set cubes of each flavor in a separate own bowl
4. Allow party guests to fill their cup with Jello, alternating colors as they like
5. Pour some Pop Rocks on top (not too many, or you'll have a mess)
6. Pour Ginger ale or lemon lime soda on top, and enjoy!

Cooper and Me Children's Book Review and Giveaway

  

Along with the excitement and anticipation of starting school for the first time (or a new grade), also comes, for many little ones, anxiety and fear.  For kids (and parents!) who are experiencing these jitters, there's an insightful new picture book, Cooper and Me, the first in a series of books that invite children to explore life with a lovable Labrador Retriever, Cooper. 

Cooper and Me was illustrated by 11-year-old Alexa Peters and co-written with her mother, Monique Peters.  The idea was inspired by Alexa's own experiences on her first day of school.  A talented young artist and writer, Alexa wanted to give back to others in a meaningful way through her art.  Starting at a very young age, Alexa created illustrated stories about her daily experiences, and from the pages of her sketchbooks came the idea for her first book, Cooper and Me. 

Through rhythmic verses, Cooper and Me tells the story of a young girl who is nervous as her first day of school approaches.  She is frightened about leaving home and doesn't want to go without her best friend, her dog Cooper. Fortunately her mother finds the perfect solution to help the little girl overcome her fears – a small replica of her beloved pet she can take to school with her.  In Cooper and Me, the story of a child’s worries about starting school has evolved into a timeless tale about overcoming separation anxiety and trying new things – basic emotions all people experience throughout their lives – but this time, written by a child, for children.

I know that most of our kids have already had their first day of school, but this book is great for helping the little ones out for any "firsts."  This book could be read for the first day at a babysitter, first day at Sunday school, or even the first day at a friend's house.  The rhyming verses and the cute lab kept my boys listening.  I thought it was an interesting idea for the mother to introduce a little version of the family pet for the little girl to take with her places to make her feel at home.  I thought it was cute how the dog's name is Cooper and she is given a miniature version to take with her.  It kind of made me think of the car, mini-cooper.  What's also great about this book is that it has a page at the end to make it a keepsake book.  You can fill in your child's name, and information about the child's first day of school.  You can write how the child felt that day, and some of the kids that they met. 

You can visit Cooper's page and print out some great coloring sheets.  There is even a really cute Halloween one.  There is also a word search, which my boys love.

How many times have you seen your poor little child fast asleep in their carseat?  Hopefully for your sake a bunch!!!  Now, how many times has their head been leaned half way down, or their neck is so crooked you don't know how they are asleep at all?  I have three children, so I have seen these scenarios plenty of times.  I have felt horrible for them, but geez, I can't wake them up!!  We got to try the giraffe neck supports out.  My boys thought they were cute and were playing with them, long before they made it to the car.  I had a little trouble convincing them to put them around their neck when they first got in the car, but I wanted them to have them on when they fell asleep so they would be efficient!! Telling them that they were a "car pillow" seemed to be the best way to put it.  The supports did keep their little necks from being like a pretzel.  We only tried them out on a normal car ride, but I can't wait to try them out on spring break when we will be in the car for five or six hours.  Man, I wish we would have had these when we drove 16 hours straight back from Florida!!!
